What makes you hit the back button on a forum?
Well, we've all been there: checking out a forum you're not a member of and after looking a bit, you decide to bail. The question is why and how can aspiring forum owners avoid such?
Personally:
It is dead. If there hasn't been at least a few posts in the last 24-hours, I'm figuring it is de facto dead. It is a harsh truth, but empty restaurant syndrome is a very real issue with forums.
It is overrun with spam. See the first point — likely a dead forum.
Something significant is broken. Sign up, a key feature, whatever, not working — forget it, no one is wasting their time.
Garbage board software. We all have our loved and loathed board software. There are a handful, however, are just so lacking, no thanks.
Obviously toxic. Overt hostility, endless arguments, racial slurs, crackpot conspiracies, political extremism, nasty visual content, et al., is another reason to avoid. (There are some folks into that kind of content. They're often called trolls.)
Information light content. This one is more personal, granted, but if most of the discourse is just fluff, there's no reason to stick around. (Though there are those into just chit-chat, so that can work for some.)
How about you?

Well, too much pop up ads could make me get out if the forum as soon as possible. I do not mind pop up ads. However, problems arises when too many pop up ads start to show up and this could have bad consequences on user experience.
With some, problem with opening an account itself or not being abel to move further is the cause as you say to click the back button. Conflingo is one such Site. I have given up
AdSense ads that take over the screen.
I’ll quit coming back over them.
So true on that: sites that are so larded up with ads you can’t even use them, forget it. I get the need for ad revenue, I really do, but there has to be a limit. And such limit should be governed by sound page design and, frankly, common sense.

Ugly design or no posts in months. None in a few days doesn't bother me if there are some casual regulars every now and then
The moment I open a forum and see that the top thread were posted six months ago. I will turn back immediately. If there is no active conversation happening within the last 24 hours, I am out.
Three things make me hit the back button almost instantly: aggressive pop-ups that block the screen before I've read a single post, broken mobile layouts where text overflows sideways, and seeing the latest post timestamp from two years ago.
As someone who spends a lot of time optimizing Core Web Vitals and frontend layouts, slow page loads or blindingly bad color contrast also drive me away fast. A clean, readable theme with recent human conversation always wins.
